The Great Destroyer: Act VI

Filed under: Chapter Ten — Mao @ 12:27 am

Here I start to define it
As a sign on my skin
That I just try to wash away
Reminder infected, it’ll be painful to me

Life is so short
Close to the edge of another backdoor
Life is so sure!
…Life will be ready to twist up your world

Here it starts to enlighten
There’s a frame I can’t change
That I just have to watch again
Reminder repressed inside me
It keeps repeating

Life is so short
Close to the edge of another backdoor
Life is so sure!

…Life will be ready to twist up your world
Close to the edge

Lacuna Coil, “To The Edge”

Christian stopped suddenly, causing Nicolas and Melissande to do the same. They had been navigating the winding, narrow corridors for what seemed like an eternity. It seemed as if they were going in circles, but Christian assured him that he could find Beryl anywhere… even if she was on a different plane.

Unfortunately, his senses were overwrought with something else. It pulled at him, willed his feet forward; it was like a distant cry that he couldn’t ignore. He gave in to it and it had led him here. The walls were lined with cells, occupied by both the living and the dead. Those who lived were barely on the cusp and those who lie dead were emptied husks, skin wrinkled and dry, as if sucked clean.

“Where is this?” Christian demanded of his companions. His voice was heavy, laden with anger.

“It… it’s the holding cells,” Nicolas offered up hesitantly. “But Beryl wouldn’t be here–”

Nicolas was cut off by Christian breaking off into a sudden run down the hall. Melissande shouted after him, annoyed.

“Christian! Where are you going?!”

Still, she could not bring herself to follow. Something about this place was off, even to her. It made her skin crawl. She remained rooted to the spot, nervousness traveling up and down her spine. Nicolas seemed to share her apprehension. They stood in silence.

Meanwhile, Freya and Amon were writhing in agony. Their last bits of strength were being drained rapidly and their spirits had been defeated by all the casualties that surrounded them. It had been necessary, this mournful sacrifice. There had been no other choice. Even if they had saved Laszael, this was hardly an honorable death. To die protecting her or fighting for her, yes… but to die as caged animals, drained of their very souls and energy… no.

Freya wore her clan’s loss of hope like a heavy cloak that threatened to crush her shoulders. She could scarcely stand, scarcely see, but she gave up these senses freely, willing her strength towards another end. She knew that Sanctus Unus had not left them to die here, not after what they had given to save Laszael. It was this hope that allowed her to stand while others fell, that gave her the strength to call out to any who might still be loyal…

  1. It literally feels like a race against time now, I’m so intrigued to see what happens in the next Act. Will they find Christian?, will they find Beryl?. Will Onael escape and live to fight another day?. So many questions and only one Act to go…:)

It definitely is! Onael will escape, because we won’t see her again (at least, not in this story…). So you can assume she’s escaped. ;) The ending focuses primarily on Beryl and Christian, once again.

  2. Somehow, I expected fights by now. But if you’re possibly doing another story, I’d see the prudence in waiting. Awesome, Freya’s out! LOL at Melissande. You became a “good guy” when you consented to being a double agent. Don’t tell me they’re all going to get away. Is that Xavier? Great, now the other brother has resorted to stalking Beryl. …I feel like I should be saying something of more substance, but we know how good I am with that. Oh well. Since it looks like search and recover versus search and destroy now, I really want to see what the last act has in store.

Aww, I hate to disappoint, Fini, but I had never intended any battles. Even before I thought up a possible continuation. :( This ending was primarily about the “what if”. I was leaving it completely open to interpretation on everything but one thing. Yep, that’s Xavier! Hehe. Thanks. :D

    Comment by Fini — October 29, 2008 @ 7:09 am

  3. Poor Freya, I feel so sorry for her… an all her hope, I really wish Christian or someone will be able to save her…. it is so sad to see her like that, still standing but so weak and so empty and still believing…. hope die last… that’s what they say…she has so much faith in Sanctus Unus… I really wonder if they will survive, faith and hope is not everything… and it is obvious that Freya and her clan have no more strength left.

:( I knew that removing the bars wouldn’t be enough… what will you do Christian? You can let them die, can you? It is not like you….

I forgot to comment on the first pic… it was really cool the angle was really artistic, I love Christian pants and shoes!!!

oh Beryl, what have you gotten yourself into! I’m so afraid for you, and that freak Eckhard becoming even more dangerous than before… it all yells “peligro” danger…
Well at least Melissande accepted to help Freya and her kin… not everything is lost… yet…

the battle is over but the war is not yet… so that means more trouble to come… I wonder if Sanctus Unus would be there for the last battle, or if Christian and Beryl will have to fight by themselves…

Onael should just kill Samaria… lol… get rid of her for good… Samaria will only bring more trouble to both sides… she is just a selfish bitch… he doesn’t care for good or evil… she just cares for herself… kill her Onael!!!! :D

Onael is being very weak… it could be that she does love her daughter…could it be that Samaria will live to kill her mother one day!!!

I’m glad Valerie and Senana are there… but I really wonder what can they do?

Valerie is always questioning her strength, and Senana does she have any powers? I thought she had lost everything when Freya saved her.

Wonderful chapter… and I’m so amazed again, one chapter to go and the questions keep poping up!!!

You have kept me hooked to my sit since KiD and this is WoS almost last chapter and I’m still hooked!!! Waiting patiently for next chapter!!!
Amazing job with both stories Mao… I really appreciate the time you take off your life to entertain us… Thank you for taking few hours of your day to update and take pictures and write and etc. etc! Thank you and bow to you!!!! :D Bravo

Thanks, Sandy! Actually, faith/hope is a big part of people surviving crappy situations. That is what I was trying to show here. Haha, and that’s not Eckhard, that’s Xavier. Eckhard is still quite injured and waiting to recover. The last battle is a -long- way off. We know by now that Beryl’s child is Sanctus Unus’ vessel, meaning that until the child is of a proper age, there isn’t a damn thing they can do. As for Beryl, well… wait and see. Haha, Onael has no love for Samaria. She isn’t the type. She’s just being resourceful. Samaria knows too much and is also too heavily instated in her clan (as the vampire cult leader), so she can’t simply kill her. Yet. Sesana lost her abilities as an Era after she gave her waning power to protect the others and Laszael (she was going to fall anyway). She still has her amazing strength and fighting ability, though. Awww, thanks, Sandy! I hope you all enjoy the ending and hopefully I can get that blog post and gather everyone’s responses.

  4. Shots in this chapter are especially well done! Can’t wait to read the last part, though I still can’t even imagine what will happen at the end)) You are keeping the readers in suspence, till the very end)) And that is one of the reasons, why I like your stories SO much))Thanks for an update!

Thanks, Kathy! I’m glad the end will surprise you–I was worried everyone would have it figured out by now!

    Comment by Kathy — October 29, 2008 @ 11:08 am

  5. Mehehee… Nicolas is finally doing something ‘useful’ ROFL! I hope Freya sucks him dry! (LOL) Ok so I know they won’t ‘suck’ him dry, but it’d be funny!

I feel really bad for Samaria. I mean, getting the physical treatment after voicing her opinion that they shouldn’t run like chickens. Guess she’ll be running now. Heh.

Beryl- hurry! You aren’t alone! *gasp*

LOL! That’s right, Nicolas is actually contributing. Amazing, isn’t it? Of course, it’s only because Melissande is forcing him… Samaria is getting what she deserves. Onael is fleeing because, like Sanctus Unus, she was caught offguard and unprepared. For SU, she didn’t realize Samaria existed and for Onael, she didn’t realize the extent of Beryl’s ‘part’ in all of this. As for Beryl, well… I think she may be figuring that out! ;)

    Comment by JMW — October 29, 2008 @ 11:57 am

  6. Wow! Xavier better not hurt Beryl, or the baby. Although, I’m confused: if SU was using the body of Beryl and Christian’s child, when she’s born, what will happen to her?

And Samaria FINALLY got what she deserves for being such a fresh child. Will Laszael make another appearance? Will she defeat Onael?! SUSPENSE!!!

    Great chapter Mao! :D

Thanks, Josh! As for SU using the body of their unborn child, don’t worry. It wasn’t the actual body, but merely a ‘projection’ of what will be. Their daughter is perfectly safe… for now. Unfortunately, no Eras or former Eras in the end. Laszael part is much later on in the story… but not in this tale. ;)

  7. Oh MAN!!! MAO!!!

Hehe, Phil! I hope I haven’t broke your Caps Lock key!

    Comment by Phil — October 29, 2008 @ 6:34 pm

  8. Well, I just went back and re-read the entire WOS story, starting at the introduction. I was amazed at how much fore-shadowing you did just in the introduction alone. (SU with the blue eyes, for one, Beryl for another.)

I really wanted to go back and start with KID, but it took me two days just to read WOS!

You have my vote to continue on, for sure!

Whoa! That’s quite a feat. If you get the chance, and you haven’t already, go back and read KiD. It really explains the relationship between Beryl and Christian, and also a bit more about Beryl’s own mental shortcomings. As for the foreshadowing… hee, hee! I’m glad you caught it!! But you haven’t got it all yet, oh no. The thing I foreshadowed for Beryl… well, is in the next Act. Thanks!

  9. I can’t believe how fast things are moving now. So Eckhard is lurking in the darkness waiting for Beryl, setting what he thinks is a trap but for Beryl or Christian I wonder…that should be interesting to watch when Christian finds her.

Must admit I do love the rather comic relief from Melissande and Nicholas. It hadn’t occurred to me that their blood might strengthen the Rutilus.

For once I was thrilled to see Onael get the upper hand on Samaria. And she still thinks they will live to fight another day? Samaria comparing herself to Christian…I think not!

Valerie is finally coming into her own here I think. She is doing her job with more conviction than before it seems.

Hehe, that’s actually Xavier, Eckhard’s first son. No worries, a few people got confused and will always confuse the two. It’s because Xavier strives so much to look/act/be Eckhard. As for the vampires aiding the Rutilus in that way, you have to remember that the vampires are a bastard off-shoot of the Rutilus clan. It’s been awhile, but the Demon Queen became such from consuming the energies/etc of one of the Rutilus. ;) Onael will live another day, she, too, has a place in Sanctus Unus’ plan… not a good place, but a place, nonetheless! Ha! Valerie is a Seer on a mission, but she’s hiding her true feelings. She knows what’s coming as much as I do. :( Thanks, Gayl!

    Comment by Gayl — October 29, 2008 @ 11:56 pm

  10. you manage to move rapidly between such strong and compelling emotions and situations — the despair but determined hope and faith of the Rutilus; Melissande and Nicholas (someone please throw a bucket of dirty water over that boy sometime); Christian’s utter determination and faith in his own ability to find Beryl; Onael and Samaria (I vote to put Samaria into the bucket along with Nicholas); and Valerie and Sesana…

Love the small detail where Sesana touches Valerie on the back. Odd that she would need to do that but the place seems to have stunned Valerie.

And Beryl fighting labor pains while Xavier lurks about.

I love the labyrinthian atmosphere; garguantuan columns and dark stone and everything looking like everything else. That’s strange enough in itself to be creepier than any outright horror show set.

Hard to believe you are this close…it is so good. Fabulous work. Just wonderful!

Thanks, Beth! I can hardly believe it, either. Yikes. I loved the comment about the bucket, LOL. Not sure it would help either of them much, though. ;) Valerie isn’t so much disturbed by her surroundings (given that she can’t really ‘see’ them), so much as the knowledge she has about what is about to happen. It isn’t something she’s completely comfortable with… and knowing she will have to deal with this many, many more times is very discomforting to her. Sesana is a very protective, mother-like figure, even if we don’t see it very often. I’m so glad you noticed everything looks the same, I really meant for it to be like an endless sort of maze!

    Comment by Beth — October 30, 2008 @ 1:20 pm

  11. Oh, I read KID when you were writing it, I just haven’t re-visited it yet. One of these days, hopefully before you start the next installment (which I hope you do!), I’ll find the time to re-read it from the VERY beginning.

Now I have to go back and look at the intro again!

I thought that you had, but I couldn’t be sure! My brain is so muddled lately. ;)

    Comment by Janet — October 30, 2008 @ 1:48 pm

  12. *shivers* I can almost feel Freya’s desperation and struggle.
Christian called down the hall? ha! time to pay erm amend for your wrong Nicolas!
Hmmm so both are being left behind to help Freya and her clan.. interesting.
Is she alone?? Oy Beryl, where did you end up? Breathe woman, dont go in to labor now! omg how would that be.. eesh.. anyways, if it suits his purpose Eckhard will abandon her and quickly.
OMG Beryl isnt alone… is that .. no he would have run, wouldnt he? *bites her already short nails*
Samaria chooses NOW to stand up to her mom!? Geez such timing … oh ha! Onael kicked some ass dang! You go mom show that ungrateful kid of yours who is still boss.
Valerie senses someone, but who?? hmm intriguing!!
*bounces* I cant wait to find out!! *squees* great update Mao!!

Thank you, Ruby! Hehe, poor Beryl, she’s already having contractions. She certainly isn’t far now… which is probably why Christian is in such a hurry to make it to her. Hopefully he makes it in time to stop Xavier! Yeah, Samaria chose a bad time and got the crap smacked out of her, LOL! Onael is laying down the law. Valerie is looking for Christian, if that helps. ;)

  13. WOW. Awesome last scenes to a great story! One question though…will Beryl become the woman from Ava Adore: II? Things seem to be hinting at that, and it would be an interesting end to see who she actually is. Way to keep us all wondering and waiting though! This storyline never loses its potency or ability to keep us all coming back! Sad to think that my Wednesdays might soon be empty of joy though :( Please continue!

Hi there, Kiwi! Thanks, we’ll see about the continuing. Make sure to keep an eye out for the blog post. :D As for Beryl, I can’t say. You’ll just have to wait and see. I really appreciate the support and the kind words!

    Comment by Kiwi — October 30, 2008 @ 4:57 pm

  14. It’s all happening. Christian showed some great mercy when he freed Freya and her people.

I am curious as to what Eckhard has planned for Beryl and Onael fleeing, why does that not surprise me?

Christian is having a lot of trouble right now, but he wouldn’t turn his back on them. As for Eckhard, well, he’s done for this story. It sucks, I know, but he won’t be in the end. :(

    Comment by Ysbal — October 30, 2008 @ 5:36 pm

  15. A race, will Beryl make it to Christian in time, oh what is going to happen. LOL! I absolutely adore Freya, such a lively spirited mythalogical creature. 80) and yet even in her weakened state she is so compassionate towards her clan.

LOL! I adore Melissande, she is definately in my opinion so far nowhere near as bad. Then again there is one final chapter. And how will Nicholas react to seeing Valerie? Especially after he tried to kill her. I hope she puts him in his place. LOL!

Was that xavier? (did I get the name wrong?) Whoo Boy I think Christian is going to kill his brother or father if it is one of the two I think it is.

Once again wonderful update Mao, and I cant wait until the next, although it is the last *sigh* Bravo!

Thank you, Cherie! Freya is definitely the rock that keeps her clan together and Amon has given her plenty of credit for it. Melissande is just… lost. I don’t think she’ll ever completely find her way. Don’t worry, the reunion between Valerie and Nicolas, well, you’ll have to wait and see!

    Comment by Cheripye822 — October 30, 2008 @ 11:35 pm

  16. Holy smoke it’s almost over! I have a feeling that Valerie is going to bust out with some kind of crazy surprise in the last bit. I have NO idea what in the world she can do right now, but . . . just a feeling I have.

Valerie won’t be getting too crazy. The ending will mostly focus on Christian and Beryl, with more of it being on Beryl because of the part she plays. ;)

    Comment by Beverly — November 1, 2008 @ 10:35 pm

  17. At least Nicolas is still useful for something…This is yet another example of why I love Beryl, there she is trying to find Christian (while having contractions?) and she still has time to make fun of the décor. Oooh Xavier, you better not let your brother find you there…And why do I think Onael just managed to make herself another enemy – Samaria may have backed down for now but she seems capable of causing much pain and loss to both sides in the process of trying to find a way to win against her mother. So is that Valerie following Christian and sensing Xavier?

I think you know my vote when it comes to continuing, but hope you give yourself a nice long rest and come back to it if and when you want.

Haha! That’s one way of looking at it. ;) Beryl is certainly Beryl, at least. Onael and Samaria have always been enemies, but you’re right, it’ll escalate… but not for awhile yet. Valerie is sensing Christian’s path, actually. Thanks!

    Comment by goodbye_sun — November 2, 2008 @ 10:59 pm

  18. First off, I’m very pleased that Freya and co have been saved :) I just hope that Melissande and Nicolas’ blood doesn’t make them cranky!

Will Christian or Valerie reach Beryl before Xavier jumps out and says “BOO!” – of all of the relatives for Eva to meet when she’s born, I don’t think uncle X would be a good choice, LOL :D

Hmmm, Samaria could be mistaken if she believes there’s a chance for her to become as powerful as Christian. Okay her mother’s an Era, but I’m guessing that Eckhard must be a more powerful vampire than Samaria’s father (whose identity is currently unknown). The fact that SU didn’t really know that Samaria existed may not be a point in her favour either, as Christian’s existence was part of the master plan.

Time to read the final Act!

Hahahaha! There’s just something so wrong about ‘Uncle X’! You’re right, that would be very bad… and as for Samaria, ha. She has no chance. Christian isn’t the same Christian he was. Sanctus Unus remade him in its image, meaning his old body/etc is gone. This is a totally new body and everything. Thus why he’s a bit taller and looks more like one of Sanctus Unus’ own children.

    Comment by Tanya — November 5, 2008 @ 6:20 pm

  19. I can’t help but feel like this is a rather “I’ll get you next time gadget” moment for Onael. If they don’t catch her on the way out it looks this isn’t going to be the end of her.

And on another note entirely Valerie looks so pretty now that she has fully ascended.

Hahaha! Oh God, Onael as The Claw. I am dying of laughter over here. :D Valerie is definitely growing into herself…

    Comment by Verity — May 2, 2009 @ 1:52 pm

  20. I can’t believe I’m so close to the end. It feels like there is so much going on and I’m really excited to see the conclusion. :D

I can hardly believe it either! Didn’t you just finish KiD? LOL
