Reflection: Act V

Filed under: Chapter Eight — Mao @ 12:47 am

My name spells joy
I can’t remember darkness
Except a dream
You saved my life

Do you wonder what you saw
Floating softly at the niles edge

Wandering eyes
Commitments never can last
It feels so cold
To know our name
I’ve never known you and I never will
What difference does
Indifference make

Do you regret what you saw
Floating softly at the niles edge
Do you regret
Regret what you did
Running softly
Softly from the niles edge

VAST, “The Niles Edge”

“Do not be fearful, Seer Valerie. I do not mean you any harm. I have brought you here because Sanctus Unus wills it. She wishes to remedy your doubt and worry.” Sesana said softly, with confidence. “It is not your fault you are so confused. It is the fault of those who were to prepare you.”

“I… I don’t–”

“Shh,” Sesana smiled. “Do not think, simply do.”

“But… but what if I’m not,” Valerie began, stammering. It was difficult to talk, her tongue felt as if it weighed a thousand pounds. “What… if I’m not what you think–”

“You are, Seer Valerie,” Sesana replied gently, closing her eyes. “There is no doubt, Sanctus Unus chose you and so you are Seer. There is no other like you. Your fate and path is your own.”

At this, Valerie stiffened. It was set in stone, there was no turning back. Whether or not she wanted it, she was the Seer. She could only step forward and accept the fate she had been dealt. There was no escape.

Sensing her anxiety, Sesana moved to Valerie. She placed her hand on the young Seer’s back, whispering calming words until Valerie stopped shaking. She inhaled deeply, preparing herself to talk.

“I… I don’t know if I can do this…”

“You can,” Sesana assured, patting her on the back. “You need only have faith in yourself. Do not see this as a burden or a death sentence, but as a destiny and a new chance at life. Think of how much greater you will be.”

“W-Will you stay?”

The fallen child of Sanctus Unus nodded, “of course. I will remain until you return. Be confident, Seer Valerie. Within you lies more strength than you could ever imagine.”

  1. great chapter. I hope this meeting with her mom will make her stronger so that we can all see what her strengths are.

    It should definitely help! Thanks.

  2. oooooooo *bouncing in my chair* go to the light Valerie.. step in to the light!!!
OMG .. is that .. I mean.. no.. well.. yes it has to be her mom.. right? oh like you’re going to answer me *giggles and clicks the next page*
I was right! Go me!! hmmm is it just me or has Valerie been doing a LOT of crying lately? Okay .. I’m being harsh… I know she’s gone through a lot but .. sheesh! Typical spoiled brat .. waahhh you werent there.. i needed you.. lets not see the sacrifice mom & dad made… *growls*
Sanctus Unus has so much faith in this kid.. she is so self loathing. so unsure. so insecure and ugh so whiney! I’m glad Abigail is there. she may be the only one who can break through and make that girl ‘open her eyes’

Yay, Ruby! You win, um, well… I don’t know. My adoration? LOL! Valerie has been crying a lot, she’s growing weaker as time goes on. It’s starting to wear her down. Hopefully we’ll see a major turn around with Abigail’s intervention.

  3. Well, thank goodness for Sesana and Abigail. I don’t know if Valerie would be able to accept this without their help, but with them it looks like she’s getting there.
Abigail is so, so beautiful. She’s like an angel.

Valerie definitely needs all the help she can get right now. As for Abigail, I wanted it to have that feel, so I’m glad you made the reference!

  4. So Sanctus Unus pulls out the ole trump card in Abigail. I can’t see Valerie fighting against her fate with her mother leading the way. So is Abigail what Eckhard was avoiding, or just that Valerie will just fall in line rather than making the final choice herself (or as much as she could have ever done?). And the whole mentioning of the Vessel and that Christian also has a calling is making me wibble a bit again. But I suppose like Valerie, he was created with a future purpose.

Haha, indeed! Sanctus Unus will stop at nothing to get the job done. Valerie really can’t fight her mother, so you’re probably right. Eckhard wasn’t really avoiding anything, he just doesn’t like dealing with Valerie (it is painful to see the child of Abigail and Antony) and he’s just a prick like that. Christian certainly has a calling–Sanctus Unus wouldn’t have arranged his birth and saved him from death otherwise. ;)

  5. I just realized we were never told exactly what Valerie’s purpose is. Sure, we know she has to “save the world” and “open her eyes”, but I don’t think you’ve ever expilictly said what she *has* to do. Clever Mao. ;)

And, another question, what is this all building up to? I know you said that Character Development is more important to you than stuff happening, but I’m sure there is a climax or some Final!scene that we’ve been working towards all these months. (Hopefully involving Onael’s fresh self!) :D

I’m glad you caught that! This will be the chapter where Valerie’s purpose or the Seer’s, rather, will be revealed. At least as much as I can. ;) It is building up to something, but not what you think. Wings of Steel isn’t about the final battle, but the preparation of the vessel and its support. You may be surprised when/where it ends.

  6. Oh wow…

Something just hit me like a slippery fish, is Sanctus Unus like Jesus, or God? She sure seems like it.

This is a really amazing Act, Abigail is so pretty! Does this mean that Abigail comes back to the real world and helps Val learn and take in that she is a Seer?

I think I’m finally getting the storyline!

Great, great update, I loved the detail in all the pictures and how we got to see Val’s mother!

Sanctus Unus is sort of an AU version of such, yes. There’s no one religion I’m following here, there’s a bit of everything mixed in. But the whole heaven/hell creation is sort of what I am taking from, but definitely AU. Abigail is dead, so she can’t come back. She doesn’t exist with a body, only her soul remains in Sanctus Unus’ special place for those who serve their purpose. Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

  7. Aw, that is so sweet! Valerie totally deserves to be with her Mommy…

Even if only for a while!

  8. All I can say is WOW!

It’s good that Valerie has her mother’s memory or spirit to help her make sense of what she has to go through

I’m hoping that’s a good wow! ;) And yes, this was exactly what Valerie needed. Here’s hoping she’ll shape up a bit…

    Comment by PRMami — May 14, 2008 @ 8:24 pm

  9. Very clever of Sanctus Unus to bring Val’s mother back to talk to her, I think its gonna be the key trick to turning Val around.

But I wonder if even Val’s mother is going to be able to show Val that Nic must be ignored. Val seems to have this infatuation with Nic and it clouds her better judgement. And, if I’m not mistaken, she usually turns into an inconfident person whenever she’s had a visit from him or hes around.

It would be interesting to see Anthony again. I always had a soft spot for that man :)

Sanctus Unus knows how to get things done. ;) Valerie’s mother will definitely bring forth some rationality in Valerie. Abigail has always been the one to ground her. But to give her the strength to go on? That may be beyond Abigail’s abilities. As for Antony… well, who knows. ;)

  10. Gorgeous imagery when Valerie meets Abigail — the decision to place the meeting in a garden was perfect!

Interesting beginning to this piece, when Sesanna tells Valerie that her fate and path are her own, to which she responds (in thought) that everything is set in stone. Does she have a choice at all? Even to walk away?

Hope Abigail gives her some strength of purpose since she seems to caught in doubt and so uncertain about what she wants to do.

    Beautiful chapter!

I’m glad you liked it! I was trying for an ethereal feel. It’s always fun to mess around with that sort of look. Valerie really doesn’t have a choice; just like Christian, her birth was planned and organized by Sanctus Unus. She is the only one who can fulfill this task and if she were to walk away, everything would be for naught. Thanks!

  11. i think my new favorite is Sesana, but Melissande still wins by some. ive been waiting for someone to comfort valerie! the poor kid needs that.. and finally Sesana gave it. i hate it when they all tell valerie to suck it up. she needs to spend some time with her mom before she does her purpose, because she doesnt seem to happy.. great act Mao!

Sesana can definitely comfort Valerie, she’s walked down a similar road. Plus, she just has that motherly instinct. It’ll be good for Valerie to spend some time with Abigail. Thanks!

  12. Im guessing that this is what Eckhard didnt want to do with Valerie… Aw, I hope she can finally strengthen up with help from her mother…

Eckhard couldn’t help her nearly as well as Abigail, but he certainly didn’t want to prepare her to see Abigail, either. ;)

  13. This is getting really exciting. Finally Valerie will understand what will have to be done. The poor thing has been left guessing for so long…and so have we ;-)

I’ll always do my best to tie things up/explain them. That which is meant to be explained, that is. ;) Sometimes it just takes a little while or a character needs some time before it’s revealed.

  14. mommies make everything better!

Haha, aww. We’ll see about that.

  15. Aw yay! I’m glad they finally got to see each other…hopefully she will use some of those parenting skills and help Valerie become less whiny and uncertain.

Haha, yeah, I’m sure Abigail can talk some sense into Valerie.

    Comment by Tiana — May 16, 2008 @ 1:38 am

  16. Valerie is given a chance to see her mother again. This was such a heartwarming scene and maybe something Valerie needs to overcome the self doubt and the uncertainities that are plaguing her right now.

On the other hand, it’s a clever way for Sanctus Unus to strengthen Valerie so that she’ll be more compliant.

    Ack, I see motives everywhere.

Ahhh, as well you should! I’m sure Sanctus Unus means well, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t also have her reasoning. This is definitely what Valerie needs. If everything works out, everyone wins in the end. Without Valerie, the ‘plan’ is pretty much forfeit.

    Comment by Anghard — May 19, 2008 @ 10:38 pm

  17. I’m glad that Val has Sesana and now her mother to try and prepare her for whatever’s ahead. But, as I’m sure you’ll probably have guessed, I’m still suspicious about Sanctus Unus master plan. As the others have said, it was very clever of her to bring Abigail out in order to convince Val that she should accept her fate (emotional blackmail is always useful if it works). But do Sesana, Abigail and co even know what’s really going on, or has SU been spinning them a yarn? Is it really Abigail, or just a decoy? I’d better whiz over to Act VI and find out!

Ahhh, I love your unending suspicion! While I’m sure Sanctus Unus has her own motives, she is really just trying to help. That is truly Abigail, her soul, at least… as her body is lost. Sanctus Unus does reward those who follow the plan. The difficult thing with Sanctus Unus is that being as it is, omnipotent and truly immortal, it does not have the same concept of things as mortals do. So what mortal see as important, it sees as trivial. But it is ‘good’.

  18. Okay, I’m starting to catch up. That was a beautiful reunion with her mother. I’m glad she is getting to talk with her. I hope she can lay some of her family history to rest as well as find her purpose. It makes me wonder though, why Sesana took the blame for something her parents were supposed to do: prepare her for her role in this battle. Her father was with her for years after Abigail died. I understand he was grieving, but still, he had a job to do.

Glad to have you back! As for Abigail and Antony, that was never their purpose. Antony’s purpose involved the Demon Queen and preparing the way for Valerie. It was up to Eckhard to train and prepare Valerie, as he is very similar to her in certain ways. Thus why Sesana lied and covered for him. It was the only reason he was allowed to live and return from the demon realm after Abigail sent him there and broke the connection to save Antony, thereby trapping him there.

  19. Aww that was such a sweet reunion, I’m glad Valerie had a chance to talk to her mother, and it seems like they are going to spend some time together, I’m so happy for them both, so many years have passed!! That last picture of them embracing was very touching!!!

    Beautiful written!!!

Mao edit: Thanks! I had a lot of fun reuniting Valerie with her mother. :)

  20. That was really sweet. I think this is exactly what Valerie needs in such a transitional time in her life.

And I am rather hoping we get a glimpse of Antony too :)

She definitely needs some perspective and to learn that it isn’t always against her. The world is not out to make her miserable. Oh, you will…

  21. Aww, I loved that – such a softie, I am! I’m glad Valerie got to speak with Abigail again. She was was so young when she died and she’s still so young. And all these revelations she’s had lately are a lot to take in. She needs her mum. ;)

Hehe, I was so excited to unite Abigail and Valerie! I’ll admit, these parts made me a little emotional. ;)
